Kickoff Weekend! We Are!
Penn State football is finally upon us, and with an exciting slate of games slotted for the first half of fall, we realize how much fun it is to be around Happy Valley during one of the best seasons of the year. Nothing beats Penn State football, but there's plenty more to do around town besides tailgating and taking in the gridiron action.
Labor Day weekend will be chock full of exciting events for all ages. For the family, a host of Penn State athletics will be in full swing starting September 2nd all the way into Labor Day on September 5th. Both the men's and women's soccer teams hit the pitch, but only one team will be in State College. The defending national champion women will be on the road against UCLA, but the men stay home to take on a talented James Madison team. The men play once again on Monday against Oakland.
Off the pitch, those looking for a relaxing weekend retreat can unwind at the Mount Nittany Vinyard and Winery, where those of legal age (sorry kids) can enjoy an afternoon of wine and light treats during the sixth annual "Wine and Tapas" Summer Gala. From 6-8pm on Friday, September 2nd, enthusiasts can take in the scenery accompanied by the soothing melodies of Jay Vonada's Jazz Quartet, all while enjoying a delicious glass of sangria. For $35, each guest is reserved a glass of sangria, along with second glass of your liking, along with appetizers and delicious Mt. Nittany wine pairings.
For those seeking a more casual atmosphere, travel on down to Otto's on Friday for some phenomenal food and drink (I suggest the apricot wheat) along with the tunes of Miss Melanie and the Valley Rats -- an evening sure to kick off the pre-football festivities in style.
Looking for a fun outdoor experience to enjoy your post-football Sunday morning? Check out the 2016 Crickfest in nearby Coburn. The festival, in its 14th year of existence, celebrates the Penns Creek Watershed. Free outdoor activities the entire family can enjoy will be available, along with live music, workshops, and local delicacies from around the area will be served.
There is certainly a lot to do here in Happy Valley in the summer and fall months. There are concerts at the Bryce Jordan Center (including an appearance by Theresa Caputo October 3), Eisenhower Auditorium, Penn State sporting events, tasting trail, and of course, Penn State football.
The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts brings over 100,000 people to downtown State College and the University Park campus of Penn State each July to celebrate the arts! Come shop at our nationally recognized Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition, and take in performers of international, national, and regional stature on outdoor and indoor stages. You won’t want to miss our giant sand sculpture, the Downtown State College Italian Street Painting Festival, or BookFestPA. We have a full day of children’s activities, a gallery exhibition, and more!
